Who Can Become an Egg Donor?
To ensure safe and successful outcomes for the egg donation procedure, we have specific requirements that egg donors must meet. Below are the minimum qualifications for women who wish to become egg donors:
-
Age - Egg donors need to be between the ages of 21 and 28.
-
Physical Health - The donor must be non-smokers with regular, monthly menstrual periods. They should also be psychologically healthy, with no history of psychoactive drug use, and must have no history of inheritable genetic disorders.
-
Birth Control - Donors should not be using Depo-Provera injections or implants as a form of birth control.
-
Dependability and Maturity - Donors should be dependable and mature, and ready to undergo the medical examination process.
Egg Donor Selection
After the person has been chosen as a suitable egg donor, she undergoes the process of medical and psychological screening which includes several parts. Firstly, egg donor will have a physical examination, including pelvic exam.
Blood tests - will be taken to check hormone levels.
Ultrasounds - will be used to examine the donor's uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic organs.
After that, infectious disease screenings will be carried out because when blood or tissue is transferred from one person to another, it may carry certain sorts of viruses and bacteria. Therefore, to minimize this risk, donors are tested for a variety of infections. These tests include:
Pelvic exam – a scrape from the donor's cervix will be taken to test for gonorrhea and chlamydia.
Another blood test – will be taken to test for syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and HTLV 1
HIV test – to check the donor's exposure to the disease
Screening for inherited diseases are also carried out to learn about a donor's genetic makeup and to minimize the chance that a baby will have a birth defect or inherited disease such as Tay Sach's, Huntington's disease, sickle cell anemia or hemophilia.
Potential donors must also fill out a form confirming that they do not use cigarettes or alcohol. At the end, psychological screening is also conducted by a mental health professional where they discuss the donor's life circumstances and thoughts, ensuring that she will readily and smoothly fulfill the requirements of egg donation. We do not accept women as donors if they are not in the age range of 21-28, have a history of smoking or drinking, are experiencing significant stress in their lives, or do not fully realize the responsibilities associated with being an egg donor.
