Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a set of genetic tests that are performed on the embryos in the blastocyst stage before they are implanted back into the uterus. Using advanced technologies, PGT tests give us the ability to identify embryos that carry a specific genetic disorder or disease. By using PGT diagnosis, we can identify impaired or faulty embryos and thus reduce the chances of pregnancy complications at the gestational stage. Different types of PGTs are recommended to intended parents according to their genetic history and condition.

PGT-A

When the cells of an embryo have this complete number of chromosomes, it is referred to as a euploid (healthy) embryo. Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy is the test that examines whether the embryo has an abnormal number of chromosomes (aneuploidy) or not. PGT-A is a vital tool for avoiding genetic disorders caused by an abnormal number of chromosomes, such as Down Syndrome, Turner syndrome, Patau syndrome, and others. Therefore, we inform every parent about the importance of PGT testing and thoroughly monitor every embryo through PGT tests before they are transferred to the uterus.

PGT-M

Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic/Single Gene Defects. The test is used to identify embryos that carry a specific genetic disorder or disease. PGT-M is suitable for people who have the risk of passing on a specific single gene disorder. After testing, embryos that do not carry the genetic disorder or any chromosome rearrangement will be selected for implantation.

PGT-SR

Preimplantation Genetic Screening for Structural Rearrangements is designed for people who have chromosome rearrangements such as translocations, inversions, or deletions, and are therefore at risk of creating embryos with the incorrect chromosome structure. Before undergoing any PGT test, our genetic counselor will meet with you to discuss which test might be best suited for your situation, along with other procedures involved in the process.

Accuracy

The accuracy of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) varies depending on the type of testing and the techniques used. For example, PGT-A is generally very accurate, with a reported accuracy of over 95%. PGT-M and PGT-SR also demonstrate high accuracy, though it can be slightly lower due to the complexity of detecting single-gene disorders and structural rearrangements. Factors such as the biopsy technique, laboratory standards, and the type of test can affect the accuracy of PGT. However, PGT provides valuable information about the embryo, and patients with such needs frequently utilize this test with high success rates.
